Course Introduction
This course will examine a variety of international relations theories in studying a broad range of security issues. A brief overview of analytical perspectives is followed by a survey of various topics in "traditional" and "new" security studies, including the causes of war, alliance formation, balance-of-power politics, security regimes, nuclear and conventional deterrence, the democratic peace, military strategy, international terrorism, and domestic constraints on the use of force. We will use a variety of theoretical perspective to investigate these and other issues, paying particular attention to evaluating the theoretical arguments with both historical and systematic evidence.
