Advanced Techniques in Measurement is a course combined lecture, laboratory-experiment, and project, which challenges students to establish new methodology or use advanced laser diagnostics to measure different physical parameters and solve the problems we often encounter in the area of chemical reaction, combustion, thermal science, flow, and mechanical engineering. Advanced laser diagnostics are essential because the research/design of power machinery such as internal combustion engine, gas turbine, rocket, missile, boiler, and other type of processes which involves heat and flow depend on how many percentage we can control the flowfield and the processes of fuel/air mixing, ignition and combustion, pollutants formation, et al., and temperature distributions, species concentration distributions, droplet/particle size distributions are the key parameters for understanding and thus controlling the processes.
In this course, the graduate students will learn the fundamentals of laser diagnostics for different physical quantities, and then, will be trained to master the advanced measurement techniques through experiments, and finally elevate their problem-solving abilities by means of establishing a scientifically reasonable and feasible methodology at the course project.
